Hunt Description

For giant brown bear, most hunters dream of hunting the famed Kodiak Island. The bear on this island do indeed grow to overwhelming proportions which draws many hunters each year. To maintain the overall population and quality of the brown bear on Kodiak Island the state of Alaska has mandated that all hunters draw a permit first. This outfitter is limited on how many he can apply for each zone but has an excellent draw rate for those that are applying to hunt with him. Once the tag has been drawn, the probability of taking one of these monster bears is 50/50 or better. On a regular year, this hunt has a 60-70% success rate.

Hunters that have drawn will fly into Kodiak airport where the outfitter will be waiting to meet them and take them to the hotel of the first night. This allows the hunters to get organized and rested for the excitement of the coming 10 to 15 days. Early the next morning, hunters and guides will be transported to their hunting area via 4x4, ATV and/or float plane. Due to a trail system on parts of the island, some hunting areas are accessible via side-by-side preserving the hunters strength for the hunt itself. Most hunting is done by glassing the ridges and valleys for a top quality boar and once that is accomplished, the stalk is on. Though an area may be accessed via motorized vehicle, the hunter still needs to be in good physical shape. The better shape you are in, the higher the probability of success. Hiking on Kodiak Island is not a simple task.

Hunts can be booked for spring or fall seasons. Often, more bears are spotted on the spring seasons as they are emerging from their winter dens and are searching for food. The fall season typically produces bigger bodies as they have been eating all summer and are packing on the weight for the coming hibernation. They will usually have fuller coats and less rubbing.
