Hunt Description
This "poor man's" desert sheep hunt takes place on a 14,000 acre ranch outside Hondo New Mexico. Hunters typically fly into Albuquerque and rent a car for the 3 hour drive to camp. Lodging is in a comfortable cabin with all the modern conveniences. Southwestern style meals keep you well fed for your days in the field.
Hundreds of barbary sheep or Aoudad roam the canyons, valleys and parks of this ranch. It is not uncommon to spot them from the cabin windows. This is a spot and stalk hunt with most shots taken ranging from 200 to 500 yards. This does not have to be a physically demanding hunt though there are places on the ranch that will push the fit hunter. Hunters have enjoyed a 90% + shot opportunity on this hunt.
A barbary sheep hunt can be scheduled for January or Feburary. The weather later in the season is typically mild with temperatures running in the 20's in the morning but warming into the 50's by afternoon. A ram with horns extending to at least 28 inches is the objective with some many going beyond 30 inches.
